FreelancingThis is my first blog entry on creativesolodesign talking about graphic design. Because I’m a freelancer, I want to talk about freelancing as a graphic designer and the benefits that this business can offer you.

In today’s world with the internet and many great technological developments, freelancing as a graphic or a web designer gives us a great opportunity to expose ourselves to the rest of the world. There are millions of graphic designers out there and I almost believe that in 5 or 10 years time there will be left not many agencies, but only the big once, and just the freelancers.

Whether you are freelancing as a web designer or a graphic designer, the benefits are exactly the same. The time that you can spend on your private and social life becomes hugely flexible. You can choose when to work. This gives you a great opportunity to catch up with your friends or to do what you enjoy doing. You are not restricted by the traditional 9-5 working hours.

But the downfall of freelancing is that you can feel a little bit lonely at times, because you have to spend most of the time working at home usually alone when there’s no one around. And also you have to do all the liaising with clients, paper work, dealing with payments and marketing and all that stuff, which is time-consuming as well. But you have plenty of time to hang out with your none-work friends. Traditional 9-5 workers have broader social life one would think. They have work buddies, they go out for a drink after work and socialise a lot more than we do. But what the heck we love freelancing, because we can choose the time to work and we can choose our clients and projects.

You don’t need so many clients. You only need a few good ones to keep you busy. And also you have the power to choose your projects. Usually if you’re working for a design agency you can’t choose the projects you want to work on. It’s usually the case where your creative director gives you a project and you have to do it whether the project suits you or not. And that’s where freelancing gives you more flexibility. And that’s one of the many reasons why we choose to freelance.
